Your workplace is your livelihood; you need your job. However, if you are like most people, your job is not only the source of your income but it also represents a significant source of stress. For workers in today’s high-stress world, developing skills to help you manage workplace stresses should be a priority.
The first step to managing workplace stress is identifying the warning signs. Many times we are among the last to know that our performance is suffering as a result of stress. How will you know if you are becoming overwhelmed by the stress of your job? Here are the warning signs:
- Insomnia
- Low Morale
- Short Temper
- Upset Stomach
- Difficulty Concentrating
- Job Dissatisfaction
- Headaches
- Back Problems
Perhaps you have recognized one or more of these warning signs in yourself or another co-worker and wonder what you can do to resolve the situation. Rest assured; there are proven methods to alleviate stress in the workplace. Here are a few methods that can help you manage stress:
- Plan and prioritize – Create lists, formulate plans, and set realistic deadlines. Rushing into your first idea and not having alternate plans in mind represent common stress-building pitfalls.
- Focus – Break oversized challenges into smaller, more attainable tasks. Take the time to do the job right and avoid worrying about things that are out of your control.
- Slow down – Efficiency is essential. Think plans through and begin tasks with the end result in mind.
- Limit interruptions – Distractions cause focus to wander. Try shutting off your cell phone, disabling audible email notifications, and limiting conversations with co-workers until you have completed the task at hand.
- Take a break – Studies have shown that a period of work followed by a period of rest increases overall productivity. Chat, walk, or briefly step outside to get a fresh perspective after working for 60 to 90 minutes.
- Use all of your resources – Ask for help when you need it. When an unexpected obstacle arises or a plan becomes derailed, don’t let the stress pile up; ask for what you need to get back on track.
